Having missing teeth can severely affect an individual’s confidence, especially if the space is in the front of the mouth and visible when they smile. According to the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, about 70% of adults in the United States have at least one missing tooth, and since most people would prefer to go through life with a full set of teeth, they are faced with the question of how to fill in the gap. Currently, the most common solutions are either dental implants or dentures, but which one should they choose? Each one has benefits and may not be for everyone.
Dentures or Dental Implants

Dentures – Dentures are false teeth that are attached to the soft and hard tissue of the oral cavity. While they have come a long way since their carved wooden and bone ancestors, they are still removable and can provide a relatively quick solution for missing teeth. Modern dentures usually require a dental adhesive to prevent them from slipping while eating or speaking. They are considerably less expensive and don’t require surgery. For patients with weak jaws or unhealthy gums, this may be the best choice. For those with healthy gums and bone, dentures may actually promote sores, bone deterioration and tooth decay if not properly fitted.

Dental Implants – Dental implants are long term, non-removable alternatives that actually replace lost teeth. They are anchored to the jaw bone and gum which makes them very strong and helps prevent bone deterioration which can lead to facial collapse. While the initial cost of dental implants is much greater than dentures, dental implants eliminate embarrassing slipping or shifting and require no adhesives. Also, dental implants Las Vegas require far less special maintenance than dentures and are cared for the same way as natural teeth. If a patient has a weak jaw, traditional dental implants may not work since there is not enough bone structure to anchor them. For those patients, mini implants may be an option.
